Pokemon GO: Niantic is looking for ways to improve gym system
Problem is, they don't really know how to do that...
A core essential in Pokémon video games is the gym system. Of course it’s not something you see in ALL Pokémon games, but when it’s not there, it’s a spin-off (ex. Mystery Dungeons). So when Pokemon GO was released last year, implementing the gym system was essential to be considered as a main instalment in the franchise. Problem is, it’s disappointing. But don’t worry, Niantic is aware of the problem. They’re working on it, they just need some time to think it through.
In a recent interview with Polygon, Tatsuo Nomura from Niantic admitted that the team had trouble implementing the battles because Pokemon GO is a mobile MMO based on a player VS player gameplay, so there’s simply no NPCs in the game.
“The gym portion needs a lot more work, and we are trying to improve it and make a bigger change to how the system works. Overall, I think we need a little bit more time to think through how we do it. We needed to define [gyms] in a way that works in a mobile game. For example, we didn’t have … there’s no non-playable characters. That’s not how the game works. We’re an MMO, and we expect people to play with other people. We expected more people to play that portion, and a lot of that is game balancing and just mechanics-wise, there’s some part of that that needs refinement.” – Tatsuo Nomura, Senior Product manager, Niantic Labs.
