Now that the console has been available for a few days, retailers are reporting Switch sales numbers to Nintendo in order to have an estimate on the success of the new system. And it’s good news since Nintendo just issued a press release in which they state that “Nintendo Switch sold more in its launch weekend than any other Nintendo hardware in history“.
In the same time, Nintendo confirms that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a major success, setting the other record of biggest-selling Nintendo launch title… ever in Europe!
We do not have any precise number yet on the number of units sold across Europe. However, we already know that Nintendo has sold 80,000 units in the UK. And Philippe Lavoué – Director of Nintendo France – just confirmed that the Switch sales in France are at 105,000 units in the first week of sales. We’ll now have to wait for the other countries’ numbers or another press communicate from Nintendo to know how many consoles were sold. But as far as we know, since the Wii sold at 325,000 units during first week, it means that the Switch’s sales are higher than that.
We can confirm that, across Europe, Nintendo Switch sold more in its launch weekend than any other Nintendo hardware in history. Launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has not only been bestowed with some of the highest review scores in gaming history, it’s also the biggest-selling Nintendo launch title ever in Europe, even outselling Wii Sports in first weekend sales. And all this in March – traditionally a quiet time for the games industry.
